Oakland Heritage Day A Special Event
Posted on: October 31, 2008, 9:45 am
The 11th Annual Oakland Heritage Day Festival was held this past Saturday, October 25th in Oakland's Spear Park. The park was filled with over 70 vendors this year including games for children, public service booths and much more. The community based annual event raises funding for the Town of Oakland and the Oakland Nature Preserve. The Oakland Police Department assisted with this years event by organizing parking, posting colors at the Opening Ceremonies as well as providing security throughout the park. Oakland officers presented the Child ID Program at their public safety booth, offering ID Cards for free to children who visited our booth. This is the second year we have offered this new card with a photo and fingerprint of the child that they can keep with them or can be maintained by a parent. Officers at the booth also offered safety tips while displaying community information packets and brochures. Opening Ceremonies began at 10am near a new stage that was donated by the City of Winter Garden. It was there the OKPD Honor Guard, which included Officers John Calhoun, Chris Creegan and Corporal Edward Henry seen in the photo to the left, posted colors. More than forty children participated in the Child ID Program, which has really been catching on throughout the year. We hope you visited our booth this year that you collected new information that you will find useful in the future. The event was the largest and most successful Heritage Day Celebration yet.

Oakland Police Seek Gunman
Posted on: October 31, 2008, 9:12 am
Oakland officers have been going door to door asking residents to help them identify a man accused of shooting a resident on the evening of Oct. 17th. Late that night, Kenny Postell Jr., 19 yoa, was walking north on Pollard St. near Postell Ave. when he was approached from behind by a vehicle. It was reported the driver exited the car and started shooting; Postell ran west and was shot once in the buttocks. The suspect has been described as a black male, approximately 24 yoa, with shoulder-length dreadlocks. He was driving a silver / grey Pontiac or Chevy. Postel was airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center for treatment and later released. At least 13 rounds were fired from an automatic weapon, some rounds striking two other homes on Postell Avevue. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Oakland Police Department at 407 656-9797 or can leave anonymous information with Crime Line by calling 800 423-TIPS. A composite sketch of the suspect is shown to the left.

Crime Prevention Begins At Home
Posted on: October 1, 2008, 12:20 pm
During a recent weekend, three vehicles were stolen in Oakland. All three vehicles were unlocked, keys left somewhere in the vehicle, if not it the ignition itself and all three occurred in different locations throughout town. Two of vehicles have been recovered as was an additional vehicle that was stolen in Winter Garden and recovered by Oakland officers. None of the cases mentioned involved forced entry or damage. As economic times continue to affect us all, it is anticipated that crime rates, especially those related to property crimes, will rise. It is important for citizens to take some very basic precautions to help prevent themselves from becoming a victim of crime. Take the time to protect vulnerable areas of you home and property. Lock and secure your vehicles, even if in your garage. Activate your car alarm if you have one. Never leave your keys in your vehicle AT ANY TIME, even if just going to the post office. Regarding your home and property, remember the 3 D's of Burglary Prevention; Deter - Sound residential security practices and good locks are a deterrent as they eliminate opportunity, Detect - Burglars want to avoid drawing attention by making noise such as breaking glass or smashing doors, alarms detect a burglar, but watchful neighbors alert law enforcement of unusual activity, Delay - Delaying a burglar four minutes is generally considered sufficient time to prevent entry into a residence. Burglars want to avoid being caught, so the longer it takes to force a door or window, the greater the burglar's risk. Install deadbolts on doors and attach strike plates with three-inch screws that penetrate the frame, use non-removable hinges on outside hinged doors, use solid panel exterior doors, use dowels in sliding-glass door tracks, check all porch and patio doors for security, as well as yard lights, interior lights, landscaping and be neighborly. For more information about how not to become a victim of burglary or theft, contact the Oakland Police Department or stop by to pick up a Crime Prevention Brochure that will assist you during your home security check. Just because Oakland is small, it does not mean it is crime free. Oakland remains in the Orlando Metropolitan area and no town in America is crime free.
