First Active NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH PROGRAM Initiated In Oakland
Posted on: August 26, 2008, 1:13 pm
Neighborhood Watch remains the most successful crime prevention program worldwide. For several years the Oakland Police Department has been encouraging the citizens of Oakland to become actively involved with us through practicing crime prevention techniques and reporting crime or suspicious activity. We are taking control back from the criminals. Through the dedicated commitment of the Oakland Police Department and the concerned citizens of Oakland, we will make a significant impact on crime and make Community Oriented Policing a reality. Our citizens will be crime-wise. The neighborhood of Winter's Landing has become the first neighborhood to meet very specific requirements of the Neighborhood Watch Program. We congratulate them on their efforts and partnership with us. Their neighborhood now proudly displays Neighborhood Watch signs, seen in the photo, at all entry points so criminals will know neighbors are looking out for each other and will report you to the police if you are committing a crime. This program promotes crime prevention awareness, increases public confidence and trust in the integrity, credibility and performance of your local police, generates public awareness for the need and value of participation in crime prevention programs, and creates closer ties with the community. If you or your neighborhood are interested in this program, please contact the Oakland Police Department at 407 656-9797 to see how you can be a part of this program and help prevent crime in your neighborhood.

Public Safety Turns A Shade Of Green
Posted on: August 7, 2008, 10:17 am
Recently, energy saving equipment was installed at the Oakland Public Safety Facility located at 540 E. Oakland Avenue. The building, which is home to the Oakland Police Department and Orange County Fire Rescue Station #37, was upgraded with energy saving solar and electrical devises. Installed on the building roof is a large new solar panel that will heat all the water in the facility. Connected to the hot water heater, over time, this system is designed to meet the hot water needs of employees while significantly reducing energy costs. Also installed throughout the entire building were automatic motion switches for all lights in each room. When a room is not being used, the lights will go out and reduce energy consumption in areas not being utilized by personnel. This is especially effective in the public safety building as emergency personnel often leave the facility quickly in response to calls for service. In fact, the lights themselves have all been replaced with low energy incandescent light bulbs throughout the entire facility. Finally, an energy monitoring system was installed by Progress Energy to help evaluate cooling and heating needs at specific points within the building. For now, the blue and red of police and fire and doing their best to stay a little green.
